Multi-agency search underway for missing Connecticut man in Northampton
Authorities have recovered his car and phone but are searching a vast area as concerns grow about his welfare.
NORTHAMPTON — Authorities are searching for 36-year-old Jonathon Maxwell, a Connecticut resident who went missing over the weekend in the Meadows area using helicopters, dive teams, and rescue dogs.
Maxwell's sister contacted Northampton Police around 9 p.m. Friday after using the "Find my Phone" feature to locate him in the area. Officers responded to Rainbow Road for a well-being check but found no sign of Maxwell after searching for several hours. They did locate his vehicle, a blue Subaru stuck in the mud on 1st Square Road, which was then towed. Officers also recovered his cellphone from a nearby cornfield.
Captain Corey Robinson of Northampton Police said Maxwell has no ties to the area and no known reason to be there. Robinson noted that police are concerned about Maxwell's well-being after speaking with his sister and that Maxwell is not believed to be armed or dangerous.
The search has involved multiple agencies since Saturday. Easthampton Police brought a K-9 unit on Saturday night, while Northampton Fire searched along the river on Sunday with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing and State Environmental Police. By Monday, the State Police Dive Team joined the effort as police dogs continued to search the area.
Robinson acknowledged the challenge facing searchers. "The whereabouts of Mr. Maxwell are unknown at this time," he said. "It's just such a vast area and we don't know where he is. He could have wandered off into another town for all we know, but we're going to give our best effort to try to find him."
Northampton Police asked residents who live, work, or frequent the Meadows area to review any camera footage and contact the department at 413-587-1100 with information about Maxwell's whereabouts.
