Cafe Howl to open at Market Street location in downtown Northampton
The owners of Tellus & the Satellite Bar will open the casual restaurant serving pizza and sandwiches in September.
NORTHAMPTON — Cafe Howl, a casual restaurant run by the owners of Tellus & the Satellite Bar, will open next month at 1 Market St., the former home of Lichter & Levin Delicatessen. The restaurant will serve pizza and sandwiches and plans to expand into breakfast and bar service.
Amanda Riesling, co-owner of Tellus & the Satellite, told the License Commission that Cafe Howl represents a different concept from the Tellus restaurant's upscale dining. The new restaurant will emphasize counter service and takeout, with a focus on lunch, breakfast, and evening hours. Riesling and her business partner Nhan Bui said market research showed demand for pizza by-the-slice and a casual counter-service model in downtown Northampton.
The more than 3,000-square-foot space is expected to open in September. Bui said the restaurant's menu, featuring items like banh mi sandwiches and Italian beef, addresses a gap in the local food scene. He noted that sandwiches and lunch options of that style were difficult to find in the area.
Riesling and Bui opened Tellus & the Satellite in 2022 in the basement level of Thornes Marketplace. Cafe Howl takes its name from the 1956 Allen Ginsberg poem.
The corner of Bridge and Market streets has seen several tenants in recent years. The Roost, a coffee shop, occupied the space for about 14 years before closing in March 2025. Lichter & Levin then moved in and closed after six months in business last December.
