Forbes Library to host free Birds of Prey presentation

Tom Ricardi, founder of a raptor rehabilitation facility, will present live birds of prey and discuss conservation at the June 20 event.

NORTHAMPTON — Wildlife rehabilitator Tom Ricardi and local conservationist Emma Howard will present a free outdoor program called "Birds of Prey" on Saturday, June 20, at 2 p.m. on the lawn at Forbes Library. The event is being offered in collaboration with the library and state Rep. Lindsay Sabadosa.

Ricardi, founder of the Massachusetts Birds of Prey Rehabilitation Facility, will give an educational presentation and introduce live raptors to attendees. The program aims to teach audiences about the birds' behaviors, habitats, and ecological roles while discussing how community members can help protect them.

Forbes Library Director Lisa Downing said Ricardi's programs are well-received by the public. "People really enjoy the live animals and learning so much about these mysterious birds," Downing told the Reminder. She noted that the event includes information about how reducing chemical use can help protect birds of prey.

Ricardi spent 30 years as a game warden for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before founding his rehabilitation facility. Through live presentations, he has educated thousands of people about native wildlife and conservation.

Howard said the event offers a chance for people to learn directly from a regional expert. "We're hoping this event provides a unique opportunity for people to learn about their local wildlife, the role it plays in our ecosystem, and how they can play a role to better protect and advocate for wildlife," she said.

The program is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Ricardi will share practical information about protecting birds of prey and other native wildlife.
